Nizhny Tagil is the birthplace of the Russian iron tray decorated with lacquer painting. This unique form of industrial art has enriched the cultural heritage of Russia. The tradition of lacquer painting on metal developed thanks to the industrial empire of the Demidov family.
The two-story wooden building that houses the Museum of Tray Painting History is known as the Khudoyarov House. It was constructed or purchased by the lacquer painting master Fyodor Andreyevich Khudoyarov in the 1820s. Later, the house was inherited by his son Isaak Fyodorovich Khudoyarov who was also a famous Nizhny Tagil artist. Metal trays produced by local blacksmiths were delivered to this house and were decorated here.
On the ground floor, there was a workshop with a large Russian stove that was used in the manufacturing process. The craftsman’s family lived on the second floor.
