The Municipal Budgetary Cultural Institution “Museum of Sarov” was founded in 1957.
The museum’s most valuable exhibits include books from the Sarov Monastery Library, icons, 19th-century church utensils and vestments, as well as personal belongings and documents of prominent Soviet physicists (Yuly Borisovich Khariton, Andrey Dmitriyevich Sakharov, and Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich) and major contributors to the Soviet nuclear industry (Pavel Mikhailovich Zernov and Boris Glebovich Muzrukov). Moreover, the museum houses works by Soviet artists, including Pavel Petrovich Sokolov-Skal, Boris Valentinovich Shcherbakov, Mikhail Vasilyevich Kupriyanov, Dmitry Vasilyevich Nechitaylo, Pavel Fyodorovich Sudakov, Boris Mikhailovich Lavrenko, Mikhail Petrovich Konchalovsky, and Mikhail Georgievich Abakumov.
The museum collection includes
over 22,000 artifacts, which are displayed in permanent and temporary
exhibitions and used by researchers for their work on books.
