Nizhnevartovsk Museum of Local History was founded on November 1, 1973. A historian, ethnographer, and teacher Timofey Shuvayev was its first director. Nowadays, the museum bears his name.
In 2003, ''History of Russian Everyday Life'' was opened in the old part of the city. It is a branch of the main exhibition. It is a historical, cultural, architectural complex, which includes a two-story wooden house and some outbuildings: a steam bathhouse, barns, sheds, cattle pens.

Inside the main building, there are reconstructed interiors of different periods: a peasant hut with an upper room and an inner porch, a merchant’s family room, an interior of a city dwelling from the 1930s — 1940s.
The museum stores over 36,000 items of storage of pictorial, material, written sources, revealing the history of the village, district, city of Nizhnevartovsk.
