‘One cannot but admire Sorrento! It is the cradle of folk songs. The house of Tasso is here, and the shadow of Eleanor sometimes walks along these streets. Sylvester Shchedrin lived here! And he was buried here, in the church of the Holy Spirit! Lebedev, Sternberg, Alexander Ivanov worked here. Corot, Léopold Robert, Rousseau, Nicolas Poussin, Andreas and Oswald Achenbach lived here. Is there a personality in art who did not draw inspiration from here! And that’s why I, a sinner, sat down on the very spot where Shchedrin used to sit, and furiously started painting from nature in the morning… This was a great audacity, but I always adored this master and lovingly copied his studies in our Academy. I had to paint ten studies; only after that, in Rome, I was able to finish this work’.

Bogolyubov arrived in the Italian city of Sorrento, in the vicinity of Naples, as a scholarship holder of the Imperial Academy of Arts. The ancient city captivated the artist with southern beauty and he decided to portray it.
The landscape presented at the exhibition is created in the best traditions of academic painting. Bogolyubov painted in fine detail a blue sky with floating snow-white clouds, a translucent haze in the hills, light waves of the azure sea, and houses on seaside.
Alexey Bogolyubov had two passions: his love of painting and love of the sea. He became an artist against the will of his father, who wanted his son to devote his life to naval service. At a young age, Bogolyubov enrolled in the Alexander Cadet Corps, and later entered the Saint Petersburg Naval Cadet Corps. He graduated with the rank of midshipman.
Bogolyubov served in the Navy and went on a long voyage on the frigate Kamchatka. At the time, he met President of the Academy of Arts, Duke Maximilian Leuchtenberg, and artist Karl Bryullov; he studied the art of William Turner and Ivan Aivazovsky, which had a great influence on shaping Bogolyubov’s creative style.
Thus, the passion for painting got the upper hand and Bogolyubov entered the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg in 1850. Immediately upon graduation, he was appointed Artist of the Chief Naval Staff. Bogolyubov traveled a lot, lived and worked in Europe for a long time. In 1873, the artist settled in Paris, where he mentored young Russian artists who came to him and helped them adapt to life in the large European capital.
