A sketch to the painting entitled Political Rally in Rome displayed at the Tambov picture gallery was done by Karl Bryullov. He was the only Russian artist who was awarded with a laurel wreath and a diamond ring handed over to him personally by Nikolas I. Bryullov was also referred to as the first painter brush of the state for his monumental work The Last Days of Pompeii.

In 1849, doctors insisted that the 50-year old painter should go to the Portuguese island of Madera for a course of medical treatment. From Madera he moved to Rome where he stayed with Anjelo Tittoni, former colonel of the National Guard, a strong supporter of Italian revolutionary Garibaldi. In the meantime Bryullov got down to work on the picture Political Demonstration in Rome in 1846 that was dedicated to popular liberation movement in Italy during the rule of Pope Pius IX.
Karl Bryullov was a witness to the events taking place at the time. In the 1840s he came to Italy to see the country on the eve of the 1848 revolution. People welcomed with ardor the liberal reforms carried out by Pius IX: he announced amnesty for political prisoners and established the Legislative Council which provided broader rights to citizens in local and public management. Acting in such a manner the clerical state managed to come closer to the goals pursued by the Italian liberation movement. And that was precisely what Bryullov wanted to convey in his painting.

For his work, the artist created three sketches — one of them still bears the inscription saying that the rally took place late in the evening. The events unfolded on the Quirinal Square where the royal palace was located: from its balcony the Pope usually blessed his people.

Placing the palace in the background Bryullov made the figure of the Pope barely noticeable, so that it was the crowd in the square that became the main character of the work.

The painting entitled Political Rally in Rome in 1846 was never completed. Prior to the revolution the picture had been in Pavel Stroganov’s collection at the Znamenskoye estate of the Tambov county. In 1961, two sketches from the Tambov regional natural history museum were handed over to the collection of the Tambov gallery while the third sketch is in the custody of the State Russian Museum.
