Travel bowl
A silver bowl, gilded in places with a minted herbaceous pattern, with a lion’s head with a ring and an inscription on the side: ‘This bowl is the travel cup of the pantler Ivan Bogdanovich Komynin’; below that — 1494 OL.
This bowl was most likely made by a foreign craftsman, because the date is indicated with numbers, while in Russia it was customary to use characters of the alphabet. In addition, the craftsman also left his initials with Latin letters. However, he took into account the tastes of his customer, carefully preserving the shape of an ancient Russian vessel.
The traditional scene depicting the Garden of Eden is carved inside: it features birds and a tree. The body is decorated with a large embossed pattern of a bunch of fruits and flowers, typical of the Byzantine style: acanthus and pomegranate.
The side, where the inscription is placed, is also
decorated with a mascaron and additional detailing. The perfect execution of
the animal mask and the finest, expressive metalwork are striking. Overall, the
bowl is a fine example of artistic jewelry.
