Artist Marina Azizyan was born on February 28, 1938, in Leningrad, in the family of painter Tsolak Azizyan and art critic Anastasia Sokolova. As a child she survived the siege of Leningrad. After the war, Azizyan ended up in an orphanage in Yoshkar-Ola. As the documents were lost, she was given the name Marina, although her parents named her Lyudmila.
Marina Azizyan is known as a painter, graphic artist, art director, scene designer. In 1959 she graduated from the Department of Theater Arts of the Cherkasov Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music and Film (presently known as the St. Petersburg State Academy). She successfully worked as a scene director for many theaters in the country.
For more than 30 years Marina Azizyan collaborated with the ‘Lenfilm’ studio, and worked as an art director for more than 25 films. She took part in production of fairy-tale films ‘Tsarevich Prosha’, ‘The Nightingale’, ‘An Old, Old Tale’, ‘Cain XVIII’, ‘How Ivanushka the Fool Travelled in Search of Wonder’ and many others. In addition, the artist worked on the film ‘The Blue Bird’, which was filmed jointly by ‘20th Century Fox’ and ‘Lenfilm’ studios. Marina Azizyan created sketches of costumes, including the famous fairy dress for Elizabeth Taylor.
Azizyan worked as an art director of the opera ‘La bohème’ by Giacomo Puccini and the ballet ‘Swan Lake’ by Pyotr Tchaikovsky at the Bolshoi Theater.
The sketch of the stage design for Act I of Tchaikovsky’s ballet “The Nutcracker”, presented in the exhibition, was made on paper in made in mixed technique. Azizyan used gouache and watercolors in muted tones. She depicted a white cloth twisted into a bag, descending from a blue sky. Below, on a dark gray background, tiny ballerinas fly away from a light disk up to the sky with their hands raised. Flakes of fluffy white snow swirl between them.
This sketch is dated to 1979. The museum acquired it from the Leningrad State Academic Maly Opera Theatre (MALEGOT) in September 1984.
