For Ivan Silych Goryushkin-Sorokopudov, his main lifelong mentor was Ilya Efimovich Repin who was passionate about teaching. He sought to be not just a professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts but a source of inspiration for his students. Artistic discussions were held in his workshop, attended by Vasily Ivanovich Surikov, Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi and Vasily Vasilyevich Mate.

The newspapers praised the high level of work produced by Ilya Repin’s students. The professor often visited their studios and interacted with young artists. In 1900, Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov started full-time studies in Repin’s workshop. It was Repin who helped him develop an interest in historical themes.

Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov wrote about Ilya Repin,

We were working in one of the classical art halls where we were assigned a model. At the end of our work, Ilya Efimovich came in. He walked around modestly, inspecting the works. It was a special moment for each of us — meeting a renowned artist and feeling embarrassed for your drawing which he was examining. Ilya Efimovich approached me, carefully examined my work, and, smiling, asked me if I had studied for a long time. I responded to his questions with shyness.

The Academy of Arts sent Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov on a journey across Russian cities. He painted studies in Suzdal, Uglich, Novgorod, and Rostov, as well as in his home region on the banks of the Volga — in Saratov, Astrakhan, and Khvalynsk. The expanses of the riverbanks, the quiet towns and villages hidden in dense forests, and the bustling and colorful markets on the Volga — all these impressions were dear to the artist and continued to nurture his creative imagination.

This exhibit from the museum collection is one of Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov’s studies, which he created in the early 20th century. In the foreground, the artist depicted the canopy above the doors, the roof, and the top of a tree with pigeons. Next to it, he painted a wall with two figures of monks in the opening. Golden domes rise towards the clouded sky.
