In April 1988 in Switzerland Afghanistan and Pakistan signed an agreement on the settlement of the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.
In accordance with the agreement Soviet troops were completely withdrawn from Afghanistan on February 15,1989. The withdrawal of troops of the 40th army was led by the last commander of the Limited contingent, Lieutenant General B.V. Gromov, who was the last to cross the border river Amu-Darya (Termez).
