The composer, musician, and teacher Sergey Golubkov was born in Barnaul in 1969. He was introduced to music by his mother, a teacher at a children’s music school. Sergey Golubkov completed his studies at the same school in 1983. Five years later, he graduated with honors from the local music college, specializing in the piano.

Sergey Golubkov has worked with outstanding musicians and composers of the 20thcentury. In 1986 and 1988, he assisted the pianist Sviatoslav Richter, who gave recitals in Barnaul. At the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Sergey Golubkov studied composition under Tikhon Khrennikov.

The composer recalls that his teacher was “well versed in new trends and directions”, had an extensive taste in music, and “did not stand in the way of his students’ daring endeavors.” The talent, professionalism, and fundamental role of classical music formed the basis of Golubkov’s creative approach.

In 1994, after graduating with honors from the Department of Music Theory and Composition and interning at the Moscow Conservatory as a composer and organist, Sergey Golubkov began teaching composition at his home department. In 1997, he also started teaching composition and instrumentation at the Department of Composition.

Thanks to his versatile interests and talents, Sergey Golubkov has distinguished himself as a performer, composer, teacher, researcher, and music critic. His repertoire includes works by many Russian and European composers, including Golubkov’s favorites — Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, Alfred Schnittke, and Edison Denisov. He has introduced the audience to over 50 compositions, becoming the first musician to perform them on stage.

Sergey Golubkov’s original compositions include pieces for the organ, piano, and chamber ensembles, adaptations and arrangements.

In 1989, 1997, and 1998, Golubkov participated in musical and ethnographic expeditions to the Penza Region and the Altai Krai. The expeditions resulted in 14 arrangements of folk songs, presented in Vyacheslav Shchurov’s book of sheet music “Songs of the Altai Cossacks”.

In 1985, Sergey Golubkov won a first-degree prize at the regional piano competition of Siberia and the Russian Far East. In 1994, he received the Grand Prix at the International Composers’ Competition in Grodno. In 1996, he took second place at the Moscow All-Russian Composers’ Competition.
