This picture was taken in a photographer’s studio of the Izhevsk factory in 1881. In the picture, you can see the family of Georgy Oglobin, an Izhevsk merchant of the Second Guild. He is standing in the center, dressed in a black suit and a white shirt. Sitting in front of him are: his wife Aleksandra to the left from the merchant and his elder daughter Yevdokiya to the right. The younger daughter Maria is standing near Yevdokiya. The elder son Nikolay is standing on the left, while the younger son Vasily is standing between the mother and the elder sister Yevdokiya.
Georgy Oglobin was the first Izhevsk businessman from the Oglobin dynasty, who established grocery trade. Members of his family were passionate believers, Old Believers. Georgy Oglobin carefully acquainted his small sons to the business, and his wife was his first adviser. Both sons showed a disposition to doing business. After her husband’s death, Aleksandra Alekseyevna took up the reins. With the help of her sons, she was doing a great job: increasing capital and expanding the scope of activities.
Later, the sons Nikolay and VasIly continued the family business, were successfully engaged in grocery trade. As passionate believers, Nikolay and Vasily donated for construction and improvement of churches, as well as orphanages and hospitals. They were given a title of Honorary Citizens for these activities.
1917 became a watershed year for the Oglobin merchants, as well as for all Izhevsk merchants. Nikolay became the first victim. He and his son were killed. Other family members were also injured. Only Vasily managed to escape. He emigrated to the USA and successfully continued doing business there.
According to the census survey of 1897, 1,197 merchants lived in Udmurtia. The Udmurt merchants were mainly local residents. Merchants' capital was mainly formed with local resources based on the development of the regional economy. Small businesses contributed to setting up private arms factories at the Izhevsk factory. As a result of the census survey of 1897, 12 merchant families with 58 family members were registered at the Izhevsk factory. The age of Izhevsk independent merchants varied from 33 to 72 years. The average age was 48 years.
