Ivan Shishkin, a Russian artist, got renown for his landscapes. He created a magnificent gallery of the defining images of the Russian forest. This is how Ilya Repin, another master from the same tradition, recalled him:

‘The loudest voice came from Shishkin, the Warrior. The audience, as it were, gasped behind him when he, with his mighty paws of a carter and fingers clumsy from work, would begin to mutilate his brilliant pattern and wipe it out. Despite its seeming completeness, the painting Noon. Neighborhood of Moscow. Brattsevo, in the exposition of the Astrakhan Art Gallery, is a sketch for the painter’s picture Noon. Neighborhood of Moscow of 1869. This landscape is partially not typical for the painter: almost half of the canvas is occupied by a scrupulously reproduced sky which the artist often depicted in fragments among wide-spreading crowns of tall trees.
In this painting Shishkin also depicted a road. In the canvases of Russian artists this image almost always appears as a sign of national life, the symbol of eternal wandering and mournful path of the Russian people. However, Shishkin radically rethought this motive because in his bright light-filled work the road becomes the path to happiness.

Shishkin prepared his painting Noon. Neighborhood of Moscow. Brattsevo for the academic exhibition in the studio of artist Ivan Kramskoy who subsequently wrote:
“Shishkin”s knowledge does amaze us… And when he paints from nature, he is sure to be in his sphere: he”s brave and doesn”t think how, what and why…, he knows everything there, I think he is the only person among us who knows nature in a scientific way… Shishkin is a real “man-school”.

The painting Noon. Neighborhood of Moscow made Ivan Shishkin famous. It was the first painting by Shishkin acquired by Pavel Tretyakov, a well-known philanthropist and the Tretyakov Gallery founder. Tretyakov had since bought at least one painting by Shishkin at each exhibition where the artist exhibited his works.
Opposite to his career, Shishkin’s personal life was tragic. He married twice, and both times for love. But his young spouses died young. Shishkin also lost both of his sons. The artist was gradually falling into despair, got addicted to alcohol, and even stopped to paint for some period.

But soon Shishkin wrapped up in his work. Being able to live only by painting and Russian nature, the artist painted every day. Trying to catch the same lighting, he set to work at strictly designated hours. For example, at noon, he always painted oaks. In the evening, when a gray fog enveloped the surroundings, he was sitting by the pond, painting the willows. In the morning, at daybreak, Shishkin could be found in the fields watching the waves of spiked rye and roadside grass.
