The icon “Transfiguration of the Lord” is a spiritual shrine of Krasnoyarsk. The day of celebration of the icon, August 6, corresponds to the day of founding the stockaded town of Krasnoyarsk — August 6, 1628. The icon was painted by Siberian icon-painting masters in 1728, for the 100th anniversary of the city.

The icon was housed in the wooden Transfiguration Cathedral Church for 45 years, until a city fire broke out on June 25, 1773. The fire destroyed most of Krasnoyarsk: only 30 houses out of 350 survived. The Transfiguration Church burned down too: the heat inside was so intense that copper coins melted. The icon “Transfiguration of the Lord” survived with only minor damage.

After restoration, the icon was placed in the Resurrection Cathedral, the first stone church in Krasnoyarsk. In 1795 a silver cover was made for it weighing 13 pounds 68 zolotniks pieces — about 5.5 kilograms. The inscription on the cover read:

This holy image of the former Krasnoyarsk Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which survived the fire in the city of Krasnoyarsk in 1773 June on the 25th day of the fire, was renewed in 1776.

One hundred years ago the icon, together with a number of other church relics, was transferred to the Krasnoyarsk Museum of Local Lore. On January 21, 2000, the restored icon was consecrated by Archbishop Anthony of Krasnoyarsk and Yeniseysk. Four years later, on the initiative of the city administration and with the blessing of the archbishop, a tradition related to the celebration of the City Day emerged. The icon was carried by a procession from the Museum of Local Lore to the Cathedral of the Intercession for a short stay in its home walls of the Orthodox church.

Archbishop Antony, Krasnoyarsk clergy and many parishioners welcomed the icon at the entrance to the temple. The Archbishop led a solemn prayer service with the reading of the akathist, which was then recited repeatedly until the icon was moved back to the museum. Every year on the City Day in Krasnoyarsk there is a procession which includes a spisok of the icon of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which is kept in the museum. A spisok is a reproduction of the icon —it does not copy it, but is revered on a par with the original. The procession starts from the Chapel of the Great Martyr Paraskeva Pyatnitsa on Karaulnaya Hill and ends at the Pokrovsky Cathedral.
