One of the most important values of Chechen culture is the public institution of acquaintanceship for young people, “Sinkieram”.
A “sinkieram” was traditionally held in honor of a guest, most often in the house where he or she was staying. The host arranged the “snkieram” in order to show hospitality and cordiality. The party included young men and women, as well as respectable elders mentoring the youth with their discreet remarks.
“Sinkieram” was the main leisure pastime and, before that, pre-marital socializing of Chechen youths up to the mid-20th century. “The Nokhchin Sinkieram” was a ritual that promoted respectful behavior towards women, guests, and each other. The institution of courtship was formed on the basis of this unifying spiritual and socio-cultural tradition.
