A Shot from the Feature Film Childhood Holidays Based on V.M. Shukshin’s Short Stories
Gorky Film Studio
#2
Childhood Holidays is a feature film based on Vasily Shukshin’s short stories. It was shot at Gorky Film Studio in 1981. The film was written and directed by Renita and Yuri Grigoryev. Nikolay Puchkov was the cameraman, and Pavel Chekalov composed the score.

The film is based Vasily Shukshin’s short stories, particularly Distant Winter Nights, Uncle Yermolai, The Redhead, and the From the childhood of Ivan Popov series. Filming took place in Srostki village and its outskirts in 1981. In addition to the set, Childhood Holidays was shot in the houses and farmsteads of local residents, and on Mount Piket. Furthermore, the film crew visited the brigade of the Klyuchevsky branch of the Semyonovod Sovkhoz.

The film stars Gennady Voronin (Pavel), Alexey Vanin (Yermolai Grigoryevich), Nikolay Mikheev (grandfather), Yuri Usachev (commissioner), and Svetlana Skripkina. Schoolchildren and residents of the Srostki village took part in the filming, namely Nadezhda Yadykina, Vasily Brovkin, Raisa and Georgy Trebukh, Tatyana Yurkina, Vera Komina, Nikolai Kazantsev, Sveta Peshkova and others, as well as Shukshin’s nephiew Sergei Zinovyev. Actors Alexander and Gennady Zavolokin took part in the evening scene.

Renita Grigoryeva recalled: ‘The entire year of 1980 was spent on preparation — we visited Altai several times, met with Shukshin’s family and friends, and determined the venues of future shooting together … we always knew that the lead role of Maria would be played by Lyudmila Zaitseva. It was the choice of Shukshin himself. In 1971, she starred in Happy Go Lucky… as his sister. Now she was to play Vasily Shukshin’s mother. We invited a young actor from Biysk Gennady Voronin to star as her husband Pavel Kuksin. This was his first role in a film, and it was Voronin who found the lead character — Vanka. He ended up being played by Sergei Amosov from the Biysk Orphanage — our incredible Serezha who poured all the noble passion of his heart into the film…’.

In 1982, Childhood Holidays received First Prize and a Diploma for the best film for children and youth at the 15th All-Union Film Festival in Tallinn. In 1983, the film was awarded State Prize of the USSR.

The photo shows a shot from Childhood Holidays, specifically the Dumplings scene. The following people are depicted: Vanka (Sergey Amosov), Vanka’s sister Talya (Oksana Zakharova), mother, and Maria (Lyudmila Zaitseva). The scene was filmed at the estate of Praskovya Kozlova, a resident of the village, at 13 Veterinarnaya Street (now called Orekhov Brothers Street).
