The history of Russian cosmonautics and the unique experience of an orbital spaceflight were reflected in the books by Gherman Stepanovich Titov. The world’s second cosmonaut wrote several books, including “My Blue Planet”, “On the Stellar and Earth Orbits”, “700 Thousand Kilometers in Space”, “Aviation and Space”, and others.
Being a unique book, “My Blue Planet” was translated into numerous languages and reprinted several times during the author’s life. The museum dedicated to the cosmonaut’s life and heroic flight houses copies signed by the author himself and his father Stepan Pavlovich Titov.
In his autobiographic book “My Blue Planet”, the cosmonaut Gherman Titov wrote with lyricism and warmth about his childhood, Komsomol youth, and the wonderful Soviet people who influenced his growth, development, and character.
In his book, Titov described in a colorful and detailed manner the day of Gagarin’s flight — April 12, 1961 — in the chapter “Gagarin’s Orbit” and his own flight in the chapter “To Space”. He recalled this special day hour by hour, including the waking up, the feeling of weightlessness, the report on his conversations with the mission control center, and the first dream ever seen by a human being in orbit.
In the last chapter, Gherman Titov listed his acquaintances — famous cosmonauts and inventors who gave their life for the development of cosmonautics. In the last lines of his book, he gave an optimistic and promising prediction: humanity is on the verge of a hard and exciting period of active space exploration.
The book includes photos from Gherman Titov’s personal archive, as well as by TASS, Political News Agency, photographers Samary Gurary, Vasily Kunyayev, Alexander Lyapin, G. Omelchuk, Alexey Pakhomov, and others.
Titov’s earliest photos were taken by his father Stepan Pavlovich. Many of them were published for the first time. Every library in every town and village of Altai Krai, the famous test pilot’s homeland, houses several copies of this book. Readers of every generation, including children, young people, and adults, read the book of the Hero of the Soviet Union, the Pilot-Cosmonaut, and the Honorary Citizen of Altai Krai Gherman Titov with great interest.
