Georges Rouault, who was a participant in fauvist exhibitions, turns to a classical motif in his painting Bathing in a Lake — a female nude in the natural environment. He fills the atmosphere with an intrinsic anxiety, sharpens the details, and deepens the colors. He adds some tragic overtones to his artworks, which is not typical of fauvism. Georges Rouault sacrifices accuracy for the sake of intensity, thus predating the experiments of expressionists.
