Pavel Kuznetsov painted ‘In the Koshara (Lambing Shed)’ after his trip to Central Asia in 1912-1913. He stayed in the steppe with the local nomadic tribes, learning about their domestic life and customs.

The artist recalled:
‘For two summers in a row I kept reflecting the region’s nature and life in my works. The charm of everything that I saw there, so strange to us Russians, offered new emotions and a new approach to painting dictated by the surroundings’.

From this trip he brought the Kirghiz Suite, a series of paintings and graphic works: landscapes, portraits and genre pictures. The series brought him recognition in Russia and beyond. Art critic Abram Efros called Pavel Kuznetsov the “Russian Gauguin” for his distinct manner of painting, palette, exotic landscapes and scenes.

The canvas entitled ‘In the Koshara (Lambing Shed)’ belongs to the Kirghiz series. The lambing sheds, called koshara’s by the nomads, include temporary sheds for the animals, tanning shops and the space inhabited by the herders. The artist showed the yurt, an ethnic Kirghiz home.
It was put up using wooden poles and felt, a task accomplished by the women alone. In the painting the curtain that separates the women’s part of the yurt from the men’s part, is up, and you can see two girls busy at household chores. The floor and walls are covered by rugs with ethnic motifs.

Pavel Kuznetsov compared the culture of Kirghiz nomads and that of Volga steppe herdsmen:
“My thoughts took me to the Volga steppes with their Buddhists, fire worshippers, poets, artists, sages, camels, birds, lambs, fabric patterns; this was all one culture, one whole, inseparable, steeped in the Orient”s tranquil contemplative mystery”.

Kuznetsov painted the canvas with tempera, ground pigments mixed with egg yolk. Tempera was used by icon painters and many Western artists. The medium had a handy texture, dried quickly and with time retained the colours better in the hot Asian steppes.

The Kirghiz paintings never stayed together having been sold to different collectors. The paintings today are to be found in the Russian Museum in St Petersburg and at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, and “In the Koshara (Lambing Shed)” has been in the collection of the Khanty-Mansiysk State Museum of Arts since 2011.
