In the 19th century, any living room in a noble house featured upholstered furniture. This was the most spacious and bright room in the house, where guests were received, and literary and musical nights were held. Therefore, the furnishings had to be appropriate. Sofas were placed along the walls, providing a good view of the paintings and family portraits hanging on the walls. The color and texture of the upholstery fabric were carefully selected to harmonize with the walls and enhance the overall effect of the upholstery. Comfort was one of the main features of this type of furniture.

The exhibition of the Lipetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore includes typical 19th-century estate furniture. This set includes a sofa, a coffee table, and two armchairs. According to the museum’s legends, it belonged to the Lipetsk landowner Satina who owned 1,832 dessiatinas of land in the Lipetsk Uyezd of the Tambov Governorate. The living room sofa features a back made of pine wood with mahogany veneering. The elbow rests are solid, with a carved front end. The front legs are carved and chiseled, while the rear legs are shaped like rectangular bars, slightly curved back. The seat is soft and removable. Mahogany armchairs are polished and carved. The backs feature intricate designs, with the upper part shaped like a polished shield. The base is a round pattern with openwork relief carving. The legs have a rectangular cross-section and are slightly curved. Elbow supports are carved with a low-relief design. The mahogany coffee table stands on a single carved pedestal with four legs. The tabletop is rectangular and has an ornate cut edge and rounded corners. The underbracing (the element connecting the legs) is low and has one drawer.
The estate furniture from the museum collection was produced by Russian craftsmen in the mid-19th century. Russian furniture of the early 19th century was characterized by large smooth surfaces that allowed the beautiful wooden texture to be showcased. Various carvings, used sparingly, only served to emphasize the calm and smooth nature of the surfaces.
