The museum displays the First Prize Medal in the male vocalist category of the Fifth International Tchaikovsky Competition and the First Prize Medal in the piano category of the Seventh International Tchaikovsky Competition. The first one was transferred to the Museum Estate in January 1975 from the Department for All-Union and International Competitions of Goskoncert USSR, and the second one — in August 1982 from the Tchaikovsky State House-Museum.
The first International Tchaikovsky Competition was held in Moscow in the spring of 1958, but no one called it the first back then. It was held in only two specialties: Piano and Violin. The main goal of the competition was to find new talents.
Famous composer Dmitri Shostakovich, who took an active part in all stages of organizing the competition, was in charge of the preparations for a great holiday of national and world musical art. At various times, other outstanding musicians participated in the work of the organizing committee, for example, violinist David Oistrakh and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.
Pianists and violinists from 22 countries — 61 performers in total — came to Moscow for the first competition. ‘I have had the occasion to participate in many competitions, to be a member of the jury many times, and I can affirm that the program of the Tchaikovsky Competition is one of the most challenging, ’ wrote David Oistrakh.
Soon after that, the Soviet government decided to hold the competition on a regular basis. Nowadays, the academic music competition is held every four years and is considered one of the most respected competitions in the world. It is attended by musicians under the age of 32 from different countries.
Since the second competition, a cello category was added to the program, and since the third, which took place in 1966, the vocal division was introduced. In 2019 (the sixteenth competition), two new categories were added — woodwinds and brass. The final auditions of the participants are traditionally held in the Great Hall of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
The prize-winning places of the competition brought worldwide fame to many musicians, including pianists Mikhail Pletnev, Boris Berezovsky, Denis Matsuev, violinists Gidon Kremer, Vladimir Spivakov, Oleg Kagan, vocalists Elena Obraztsova, Hibla Gerzmava.
