Nikolai Alexeyev was born to a commoner’s family in the Penza Governorate in 1813. In 1820, he was sent to Alexander Stupin’s Arzamas School of Painting. At 16, Nikolai Alexeyev finished school and set off to St. Petersburg to enter the Imperial Academy of Arts.
In 1834, he completed his training at the Academy and came back to Arzamas to become headmaster of art classes. He was in close contact with Alexander Stupin, the school principal, and his daughter Klavdia. Soon, the young artist was married her, and Stupin delegated training supervision at the school to Alexeyev.

In 1839, Alexeyev painted Stupin and His Students, for which he was granted the title of academician. Three years later, he was invited to sit on the commission for the construction of St. Isaac’s Cathedral, and soon he went to St. Petersburg.
Moses with Tables by Nikolai Alexeyev is a replica of Moses with the Ten Commandments, a 1648 picture by the French artist Philippe de Champaigne, now owned by the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
Philippe de Champaigne was a French Baroque artist, who was among the 14 founding members of the French Academy of Arts (Academie royale de peinture et de sculpture) in 1648. Champaigne left a huge heritage, mostly canvases dedicated to religious subjects. However, he is best known for his portraits, for instance the portrait of Cardinal Richelieu, and many others, such as the portraits of Cardinal Jules Mazarin, King Louis XIII, Jean Baptiste Colbert, Vicomte de Turenne, King Charles II of England, Blaise Pascal, Vincent Voiture, the architects Jacques Lemercier and François Mansard.

In Alexeyev’s picture, the ten commandments are written in Church Slavonic, although the tradition in fine arts is to reproduce the ten commandments text in Hebrew block script or the earlier Samaritan alphabet. Both of them are anachronisms for the time of Moses, who must have used Egyptian script.
