In this painting Cézanne portrayed the lonely figure of a smoker in an artist’s studio. A fragment of a portrait of the painter’s wife is noticeable on the wall. Cézanne was not interested in conveying the resemblance, character, or psychology of the model. Rather, he primarily addressed the model as an unwavering form, a volume in space that can be recreated in painting. The plasticity of objects in the painting is conveyed though the energetic shaping of color splashes. Cézanne fills his artwork with dramatic material tension, thus neglecting the everyday aspect and giving it a philosophical angle. By depicting the model in his studio, the artist addressed a very important topic: a discussion about himself though art, a reflection about the nature of his creativity.
