The history of the badge “For Excellent Shooting” began on May 22, 1879, when Emperor Alexander II established it by the Highest decree.

Until 1909, the badge “For Excellent Shooting” (“For Excellent Rifle Shooting”) had only one degree (class). It was a round disk made of bronze with relief circles symbolizing the target, with an inscription around the circumference “For Excellent Shooting” and two crossed rifles superimposed on the target.

On August 19, 1909, by the Highest Decree of Nicholas II, three classes were introduced. From the “Instructions for Shooting Rifles, Carbines and Revolvers” dated April 22, 1914:
