According to Nenets folklore, to live well a person needs one set of warm clothes, and to live happily — another set of clothes. The Nenets Okrug is characterized by a harsh climate, with temperatures getting as low as -50°C. Therefore, warm and comfortable clothing is essential for the nomadic peoples of the North. In winter, clothes protect them from the cold and wind, and in summer — from annoying insects.
In summer, Nenets women and children often used a worn-down winter panitsa, an unlined coat with a front opening, or outerwear made of colorful cloth. Traditional Nenets summer clothes are bright, beautiful, and comfortable for women who had to work constantly.
The cut of the summer clothing known as a “noytsya” is similar to that of the winter panitsa coat. The summer panitsas of the Nenets are distinguished by the variety of hem colors. In the Malozemelskaya Tundra, the back and sides of the noytsya are made of dark blue or green cloth, and the hem — of red or purple cloth. The sleeve cuffs are sewn of the same material as the hem and the collar — of a red or Arctic fox tail.
In the Bolshezemelskaya tundra, the summer panitsas had a different hem length and cloth positioning. Its main element is made of light-colored cloth and the hem is black. The panitsa is decorated with a contrasting national pattern on the sides, on the cuffs, and on the lower edge of the base. The hem and cuffs are covered with light-colored cloth. Women’s headdresses include wool and silk headscarves.
The summer panitsas of the Kanin Tundra are decorated with colorful strips of cloth between one and a half and two centimeters wide. The lower third of the hem is made of white, gray, or black dog or deer fur. The sides and sleeves are trimmed with fur from the legs of a red or Arctic fox.
Both summer and winter panitsas are usually secured
with a belt, with the right side slightly overlapping the left. The belt is
woven from multicolored threads up to three meters long, with tassels at both
ends. The buckle is a copper ring with two or three crossbars arranged both horizontally
and vertically.
