The Bulgarian Order of Military Merit was established by Prince of Bulgaria Ferdinand I in 1891. The decoration was awarded to the military for honorable service in the times of peace or for special services in the times of war. The 6th class order was normally given in Bulgaria to militia members and underofficers (this is a term applied to categories of sergeants and warrant officers of some states).

In 1910, Prince of Imperial Blood Konstantin Konstantinovich Jr was awarded with a 6th class Bulgarian Order of Military Merit to celebrate his reaching the age of legal majority, as the prince was turning 21 in half a year. The tradition of granting orders to commemorate important events had existed among European monarchs. Members of august families could get awards for their christening day or even as they were born.
Prince Konstantin was brought up in strictness in the large family of Grand Prince Konstantin Konstantinovich. The sons were prepared for military service since early childhood, which was a tradition of the House of Romanovs. Children were taught to be adequate to their high status and to be useful for the society rather than to rely on privileges they received at birth.

Prince Konstantin Konstantinovich Jr graduated from the Corps of Pages and started military service as a sub-lieutenant of the Izmailovsky Life Guards Regiment where his father had served before. When World War I started, Prince Konstantin Konstantinovich Jr, same as all of his brothers, went to war and received high distinctions for bravery and gallantry in action.
The Bulgarian Order of Military Merit has the shape of a cross, with crossed swords added to it. It was produced from silver-plated metal. In the times of war, the order was presented on the ribbon of the Order of Bravery, and in the times of peace - on a regular ribbon.
The decorations of all classes except the 6th were covered with special dark red glasslike enamel on metal. Participation in action was rewarded with an order with special distinction - a laurel crown of honor. The Napolnaya School Museum in Alapayevsk has the lowest (6th) class of the order on display. Its color is silver, it has no enamel coating and is decorated with crossed swords. There is an image of a lion in the center of the medallion. It is a symbol of Bulgaria and appears on the national coat of arms.
