The embossed birch bark ornament in the form of a strip is a product that was a kind of blank and was used to make household utensils or dishes. The craftsman executed a repeating spiral ribbon pattern.

The Nanai people decorated many objects that were used in everyday life, hunting or fishing, with both national ornaments and embroidery, embossing, and patterned weaving. Patterns were not common to all things. At the same time, literally everything was ornamented: baskets for picking berries and storing cutlery, buckets, ladles and many other items that were made from boiled birch bark.

Three techniques of ornamentation of birch bark products were used. The first one involved making a pattern separately from the main product. This was how cylindrical vessels sewn from a single piece of birch bark with an additional bottom were decorated. The details of the ornament were cut out of thin layers of foliated birch bark and attached with fish glue to the walls of vessels or sewn to the base. In the latter case, the thread was almost invisible — this was achieved by an infrequent stitch and solid staining of the sewn layer, most often in black.

The second, more labor-intensive technique excluded the separate manufacture of the vessel and its decorative elements. The outer layer of birch bark was painted, and immediately a pattern was outlined on it using a birch bark stencil. Then the birch bark was cut along the lines with a small metal knife, and the background was carefully scraped off the base, leaving a colored curly layer.

The third technique was especially popular until the second half of the 20th century. This is an embossing, which was created by boiling the birch bark and tinting it brown with a decoction of alder bark. After that, a pattern was drawn on the prepared material with a bone knife or the tip of a metal knife from the unsharpened side of the blade, the use of a stencil was not excluded. Finally, the pattern was carved with special bone tools with oblique parallel short dashes, a “herringbone” of dashes, dots or crosses.

To apply small patterns in the form of crosses and circles on birch bark, the Nanais used stamps that were carved from bone or wood. Embossed patterns were sometimes painted in blue, yellow or pink. All the peoples of the Lower Amur widely used fish glue when creating wooden and birch bark products.
