Fedot Sychkov
Portrait of Painter Nina Petrovna Petrovicheva
#2
As a mature artist, in 1957, Fedot Sychkov painted ‘Portrait of the Artist Nina Petrovna Petrovicheva’. He depicted her in an elegant pearl gray dress, with a discreet necklace on her chest. The woman’s face is calm and full of dignity. Sychkov with great care emphasized her femininity and beauty: a slight blush blooms on her cheeks, a slight smile rests on her lips. His main goal wasn’t just to make a portrait of a charming young woman. First of all, Fedot Sychkov painted a colleague, an artist.

He highlighted this by including the professional attributes of painters — she holds a palette with a rich variety of colors in her hands. A canvas with a landscape on it is visible in the background. Each detail encourages to look closely into her face, to see the firmness and determination of an extraordinary nature in the expression of her eyes.

Nina Petrovicheva is a Moscow artist, the daughter of the famous landscape painter Pyotr Petrovichev. She mainly painted lyrical landscapes, architectural views of Moscow and villages with churches. The artist loved depicting magnificent gardens and bouquets of wildflowers. Petrovicheva’s paintings were distinguished by bright and fresh colors. The artist also had a gift for writing: she published several monographs.

Nina Petrovicheva met Fedot Sychkov in 1947 at the artist’s dacha (country house) in Khosta, where he vacationed with his wife. She wrote in her memoirs, part of which were published as an article ‘Truly National Artist’ in the newspaper ‘Moscow Artist’ in July 1970, that it was an honor for her to speak with him:

From the very first minutes of our encounter, I felt thrilled by his enthusiasm, spontaneity, and admiration of everything that surrounded him. With a kind of childish delight, he admired the sea, the shore with pebbles, the sun, and the people, and most importantly, the opportunity to see and capture all this. We started writing to each other. Fedot Vasilyevich was keenly interested in everything that was going on in art world. He had a great interest in exhibitions, the artists, who took part; and listened to opinions about those artists. He talked about his plans, his work. He shared his worries about his upcoming personal exhibitions, and expressed an interest in my work.

Nina Petrovicheva thought of his art very highly: ‘His artworks are cheerful, bright and imbued with love for the people he portrays. They are as bright and sincere as the artist himself; his soul is reflected in them.
