Irakly Boratynskiy, the brother of the poet Eugene Boratynskiy, was a prominent military and statesman. During the period when this small-size portrait was created, Irakli Boratynskiy served as Kazan governor-general for more than a year. Therefore, in the drawing he is depicted in a uniform with epaulettes, sword and orders. In his hand he has a uniform general helmet with a white plume.
The drawing is made with a pencil, but some details are additionally painted with black watercolor paint and red ink. The painter, whose name is known, used them to accentuate the collar of the uniform and the character’s face. The bottom part of the drawing is unfinished, a rough drawing.
Irakly Boratynskiy, like his brother Eugene, was a friend of Alexander Pushkin, as well as a colleague of Mikhail Lermontov. Anton Delvig dedicated to him his idyl “Cephisus”, and Evgeniy Boratynskiy -- his poem “To brother upon departure to the army”.
In 1846, Irakli Boratynskiy was appointed military governor in Kazan. He remained in this position for twelve years. It is known that Boratynskiy was well regarded by the government and was popular with the local nobility. He had a quick mind, handsome manners and a good amount of education.
A monument to the poet Gavriil Derzhavin was erected in Kazan with the assistance of the governor, as well as a building of the governor’s palace in the Kazan Kremlin, a new stone theater, and a school for girls of clerical status. Besides, during the period of his reign in the city began to publish ‘Notes of the Kazan Economic Society’. Boratynskiy received many notes of acknowledgement from the empress for constant care for the needs for orphan’s homes.
The present drawing was donated to the museum by Nurislam Syubayev thanks to the recommendation of the famous Moscow gallerist, Russian art expert Ildar Galeev. It was part of a series of 15 drawings by an unknown artist, made in Kazan in the spring of 1847.
Previously, the drawings were in the collection of the famous art historian, local historian and Russian graphic expert Pyotr Kornilov. For many years Kornilov worked in Kazan in the local history museum, and then in the Russian museum in Leningrad, where he studied, systematized and popularized graphic art of Russia.
