Vasily Tropinin created the portrait of Count Sergey Golitsyn in the 1820s. The character is in a frock coat which was the official court dress at the beginning of the 20-th century. There are a white shirtfront, neckcloth and a red band of the Saint Alexander Nevsky order’ s ribbon seen from under the lapel of the frock. Also Tropinin depicted the decorations of the count: the orders of Saint Alexander Nevsky and Saint Vladimir. The surrounding is painted in an easier manner. Thus the artist combined in the painting the features of a gala and a chamber portraits.

By composition, the portrait did not differ from other similar works of the late XVIII – early XIX centuries. The figure of the count is directed almost straight forward, the face is turned three- quarter. The painter did not aspire to create an ideal image of the hero, so he depicted a tired look and swollen overhanging eyelids, slightly flabby cheeks and combed to temples hair beginning to grow thin. The master did not even try to hide some drawbacks in the hero’s look.
Tropinin added some romantic features to the realistic presentation of the model. He showed Golitsyn against an uneasy background. Light at the horizon, the sky is overcast. Low horizon makes the figure significant, and intense tones of the costume enhance the romantic quality of the character. The author made the painting in saturated dark and deep gray-and-pink tones. Tropinin has painted the portrait with an air of nonchalance: there are energetic, rather wide strokes visible on the canvas.

Tropinin painted the portrait of Sergey Golitsyn when he was freed from villaining. The artist acquired his freedom at the age of 47 and came to St. Petersburg where he took part in the contest of the Imperial Academy of Arts. For presented to the Academy paintings ‘The Lace Maker’, ‘An Old Beggar’ and the portrait of Egor Osipovich Scotnikov the master was granted the title ‘appointed academician’.

Soon Tropinin became famous as a master of romantic and realistic portrait. He started to receive commissions from noble Moscow families. Among them there was Sergey Golitsyn.
