The replica of the Portrait of Grand Duchess Elizaveta Mavrikievna is included in the exhibition of the Napolnaya School in the town of Alapayevsk. The original of the portrait was created by the artist Osip Braz. He painted Grand Duchess Elizaveta Mavrikievna, a German princess and the wife of Great Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich. The Duke met his future wife for the first time during his trip to Germany. Elisabeth, 16 years old at that time, fascinated the Duke with her beauty and elegance, and the Duke dedicated to her the following poem:

The wedding of the Princess and Konstantin Konstantinovich took place in Saint Petersburg in 1884. The family lived in the Marble Palace and had 9 children. Despite the religiousness of the Duke, Elizaveta Mavrikievna did not convert to the Orthodox faith and stuck with Lutheran church.
According to the memories of her contemporaries, the Grand Duchess was simple in manners, studied Russian language with diligence, showed her interest in everyday affairs and brought up children. The portraitist Osip Braz depicted Elizaveta Mavrikievna at home with the interior of a cabinet or bedroom as the background. The background is painted with few details: the wall, the furniture and the outlines of the decorative figures behind the Grand Duchess are just hinted with large bright dabs. Not long before the creation of the portrait of Elizaveta Mavrikievna, Osip Braz worked in France: he was interested in Modernism and studied the works of French artists.

His painting manner became more casual: Braz began to use wide strokes and pure local colors. The shades of his paintings became more saturated and more decorative, as we can see in the portrait of the Grand Duchess.

At the beginning of the XXth century, Osip Braz already was a well-known portrait painter. He created a series of portraits of Russian writers and artists, including those of Leonid Pasternak and Konstantin Somov. He also painted the famous lifetime portrait of Anton Chekhov. The artist is also famous as the author of many custom-made female portraits. The works by Osip Braz can be found in the largest museums of Russia.

After the Revolution of 1917, the Grand Duchess Elizaveta Mavrikievna was forced to leave the Marble Palace. Very soon, she managed to leave Russia together with her children: she went to Sweden, then to Germany, and never came back to Russia. Three of her sons, Ioann, Igor and Konstantin, died in a mine near Alapayevsk.
