Ivan Gruzinov was one of the members of the Imagist movement. They met Esenin in 1918. ‘The first time I saw Sergei Esenin was in 1918. There was some kind of literary evening at the Polytechnic Museum. I stayed among the audience. During an intermission I noticed a strange young man while glancing to the left. He instantly caught my attention with his appearance: his dressing style and hair caught my eye. He was dressed in a short, unbuttoned Russian coat. Long white shirt, almost the same length as the coat. A belt. Long, curly hair shone, blond as golden linen. He stood in the doorway and smiled at someone. The intermission was over. The audience scrambled to take seats. At the end of the evening, the performer Olenin read Esenin’s poems. After reading the poems, the he went to the public. I couldn’t help but watched the performer. He ran up to a blond-haired man dressed in a Russian coat and shook his hand. It was Esenin. We met soon after’, recalled Ivan Gruzinov.
After the Imaginists split into two groups, Gruzinov supported Esenin. Both Esenin and Gruzinov co-owned of the Pegasus Stable cafe. In early 1924, he published Pushkin and Us article in the Guesthouse for travellers in the beautiful magazine, where he wrote about Esenin’s role in Imaginism establishment.
Esenin included Gruzinov in the action group for the publication of the “Free-thinker” magazine. “I will involve Vanechka Gruzinov as my employee”, Esenin said to Rurik Ivnev. “He”s a good bloke. Unlike many others… well, screw them… I don”t even want to remember”. Gruzinov is well versed in poetry; he would make a capable and, most importantly, an honest critic. He would be cunning like a fox. And his poems are not bad, there is plenty to choose from for the magazine. Although he likes to be too wise for his own good sometimes, but it will pass, and besides, who does not have such a sin’.
In August 1924, Esenin and Gruzinov took part in meetings of the Vecheviki literary group and the board of the Modern Russia society. The minutes were taken by Gruzinov. Field of activity delimitation between Modern Russia publishing house and Vecheviki literary group was declared at this Board meeting.
Modern Russia literary and artistic society was created on the basis of the eponymous cooperative publishing house. The idea of Vecheviki literary group was conceived in August 1924. At the same time, its Organising Committee was set up. Esenin and Gruzinov were among its members. However, the project of creating Vecheviki group and publishing the eponymous magazine never came to fruition.
