One of the central works of the “rose period” is Family of Saltimbanques, which is now exhibited in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. In Moscow, we can see a gouache and charcoal sketch for this painting. Picasso’s sketch shows five comedians bearing their loads on their shoulders: a big clown, two boys, a little slender girl, and a dog. Picasso added himself to the company of comedians: the male figure in the long coat and top hat with a traveling bag resembles the artist. In the background, we see a race track where a horse race is held. The saltimbanques are ready to leave. Wandering is their life, and they are ready to get lost in the world. The worrisome and sad notes of the sketch are emphasized by the pink and blue tones, which became typical for Picasso in that period.
