Artist Sergei Simakov portrayed the view from his Moscow apartment in his painting The Holy Martyr Tryphon. Its windows on the 14-th floor look out on the baroque church of the Icon of Our Lady of the Sign in Pereyaslavl sloboda of the XVIII century and the double Riga overhead road that is part of the Third Ring Road. In the left corner, the author depicted the Christian martyr Tryphon of Apamea.

According to the legend, Tryphon lived in the III century in Asia Minor. Already as an adolescent, he performed many miracles: he healed people and helped the sick, cast out demons and once by the power of his prayer, turned back a plague of locusts thus saving the inhabitants of the Phrygian village Kampsada from hunger. Having seen his deeds, many pagans converted to Christian faith. Soon the word of Tryphon got to Roman authorities — he was seized and put on trial. Despite harsh tortures, he never renounced God and died before the executioners could carry out his death sentence. 

In his painting, Simakov shows a stark contrast between the worldly and the orthodox: he painted the overhead road, rail tracks and standard Soviet buildings in subdued tones, and used the bright red for the church and curling clouds of the sphere containing the image of the Saint. The scarlet color of God’s sleeve, St. Tryphon’s mantle, his boot and the horse harness became the color center of the painting.
