Vasily Tropinin
Portrait of a Woman
#2
‘Portrait of a Woman’ was created by Vasily Tropinin in Moscow, in 1844. This painting dates to the late period of the artist’s work. His works were characterized by the clarity of the drawing, the solid and thick painting manner and the accuracy in the depiction of details.

Tropinin often used the composition of a chest-length portrait inscribed in a rectangle or oval, most often painted against a neutral background with few details.

The portraits by Tropinin reflect the style of the era, the details of the interior of those times. Such an accuracy of the background was characteristic of Biedermeier, a trend in German art. Artists of that trend painted mainly intimate scenes of everyday life.

The portraits painted by Tropinin in the 1840s–1850s are distinguished by an increased attention to textures. So, in the exhibited picture, the artist carefully depicted all the details of the character’s home dress: the shine of the jewelry, the play of velvet fabric.

It was important for Tropinin to convey not only the appearance, but also the inner state of the model. He tried to paint people in good spirits, in a good mood.

Who, after all, loves to look at angry, gloomy faces in life? Why transfer the unpleasant to the canvas, which will remain unchanged, why make a heavy impression, arouse difficult memories in those who love this person? Let them see and remember this person in a happy time of life,
he used to say
#4
The painter was nicknamed in Moscow a ‘portraitist of dressing gowns’: when coming to get a picture for a family gallery, commissioners asked to paint themselves or their relatives exclusively in a dressing gown. Unlike metropolitan Petersburg artists, Tropinin created personal, homely, ‘cozy’ portraits of his customers.

The artist had a wide and varied circle of commissioners. Among them were officials, nobles, merchants, as well as actors, writers and artists.

In 1843, the Moscow Art Society elected Tropinin its honorary member for ‘zealous assistance to the benefit and prosperity of the Society and the school that is affiliated with it.’ Tropinin was not officially a teacher at the school, but he often attended drawing classes and helped beginners.
