A contemporary naïve artist, Robert Papikyan, painted the landscape “Spring” in 1994. Nature, fantasy landscapes and sunny sketches of paradisiacal life have always been one of the important themes in his oeuvre.

 
Papikyan started writing fairy tales and short novels for kids in the 1990s. He has published many photo books, photo albums and advertising leaflets. By the age of 50, he remembered his childhood passion — painting. And just three years later, his first personal exhibition was held at the Central House of Artists.

 
Robert Papikyan can be called a self-taught artist. While looking for his own style, he rapidly moved through a Realist period. Then he tried his hand at various techniques of folk art stylization. However, this kind of primitivism did not satisfy him. Only when Papikyan immersed himself in naïve art with its simple thinking and sincere self-expression, he found his artistic individuality.

 
Nowadays, Robert Papikyan works in the naïve art genre. This term is used to describe works of non-professional artists who did not receive proper education, but systematically and constantly create oil paintings. Artworks, which are made by naïve artists, are of high quality, despite their apparent simplicity and uniqueness. Also, they are always very understandable, as naïve artists do their best to express the ideas that concern them as simply as possible, without delving into symbolism and hidden meanings.
