In the spring of 1934, Stepan Pavlovich Titov and Alexandra Mikhailovna Nosova had a small and intimate wedding in the Kosikhinsky District of Altai Krai. This event could have been completely forgotten by now if, in September 1935, they had not had their first child — a boy named Gherman, who a quarter of a century later went into space, bringing glory to his homeland and his country.
In December 1941, the young parents also finally had a daughter who they named Zemfira. Titov Senior was a great admirer of Alexander Pushkin and named his children after Pushkin’s characters in “The Queen of Spades” and “The Gypsies”. Legend has it that this idea backfired years later. Allegedly, Nikita Khrushchev decided that the name Gherman sounded foreign, which is why a young man with the simple Soviet name Yuri was chosen as the first human to travel into space.
Both siblings grew up curious and purpose-driven children and were good students. Gherman had a bent for engineering and was physically fit — he became a world-famous cosmonaut. Zemfira graduated from the Moscow Medical University and still works at the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region.
In this photo, she is depicted with her children and nieces. The photo was taken in 1974 when one of her sons, Igor, was two years old, and the other one, Nikolay, was nine years old. On the left, wearing a light-colored dress is Gherman Titov’s elder daughter Tatyana, and on the right is his younger daughter Galina.
Gherman Titov’s legendary flight — the first one to last over twenty-four hours — took place on August 6 and 7, 1961. His sister Zemfira reminisced about that day,
