The sotskiy’s badge is round and made from tinplate. The coat of arms of the Russian Empire is stamped on it, and the inscription on the bottom reads ‘Sotskiy.’ Eight holes are located on the edges of the badge in pairs. These holes were necessary to sew the badge onto the outerwear, where it was displayed on the chest.

Communities were also allowed to hire trustworthy people for the position of sotskiy. Social and police duties were assigned to sotskiy.
In 1863, a new uniform for the police was introduced throughout the Russian Empire. The position of sotskiy now required a badge that had to be worn on the chest. These badges were a little different from one another — some had the number of the district, or the name of the uyezd. Badges also varied in shape — some were round, others were small; some were small, and some were large.
When the Police Department issued the badge, the person was considered appointed to his position. The badge was returned when another person was elected for this position.
