In this painting we can see parents blessing a newly married couple before they leave for church. This tradition was still preserved in Franche-Comté, an old province of central France, where Dagnan-Bouveret often came to look for subjects for his paintings. This artwork made him a star of the Salon in 1882. Critics immediately named it one of the artist’s best pieces. Its success and its resemblance to some works by Russian peredvizhniki raised the interest of Sergey Tretyakov, who purchased it for his Moscow collection. This painting is picturesque and full of light that transforms the interior details — the artist was obviously familiar with the developments of impressionists. The brilliant still life with a pile of plates, bottles, and a vase with flowers on the wedding table resembles the tradition of Dutch genre painting.
