Henri Lebasque started his studies at the Parisian Académie Colarossi and continued his education with Leon Bonnat. Under the influence of Pissarro and Renoir, he discovered a new understanding of color that grew even stronger when he became acquainted with “Nabi” group artists Bonnard and Vuillard. He started to study color theory after meeting Seurat and Signac. In 1906, Lebasque began spending several months at a time in the south of France, in Provence and Saint-Tropez. The time spent there changed his paintings completely and enriched his palette. The study “After Bathing” is made with separate brush strokes, which is very typical of Lebasque’s first months in Saint-Tropez. The unconventionally bright colors are explained not only by the artist’s life in the south, but also by his immersion into neo-impressionist and fauvist discoveries that made colors resonate at their full strength.
