In the center of the lithograph, there is an icon based on a lifetime portrait of St. Seraphim of Sarov, painted five years before his death by the artist Serebryakov. The venerable elder is shown wearing a mantle, an epitrachelion, and epimanikia. Both of the saint’s hands are folded on his chest in the same way as one does before communion. In his left hand, the monk is holding a lestovka — a prayer rope used to observe the rule of prayer and achieve a state of spiritual asceticism, detachment from everything worldly.
The image of St. Seraphim is surrounded by six hagiographic border scenes. These include the most significant episodes from the saint’s life.
In the upper left corner, there is a scene depicting the saint’s miraculous healing through the intervention and help of the Virgin Mary.
The scene in the upper right corner depicts the
miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary to St. Seraphim, a year and ten months
before his death. The Virgin Mary appeared to the elder for the last time on
the Feast of the Annunciation, which was a foreshadowing of his blessed
passing. She promised him help and intercession in his earthly labors and in
the establishment of the Diveyevo Convent. She said,
