Why do you have that book in your hand? the ruler asked.
I was
reading from it when I was caught, Euplius replied.
The ruler of Catania tried to convince the deacon to abandon his faith in Christ. However, nothing could make him do that. Despite torture and imprisonment, his faith remained strong. After some time, Euplius was summoned to court again. The ruler asked him,
Do you still have the writings that were prohibited by the emperor and which you had to hand over to the authorities?
Euplius replied,
I am a Christian and I cannot give them up. I would rather die than do
that. These writings contain eternal life. In order not to lose that, I am
willing to give up my earthly life. The ruler then asked, Where are they? Euplius said, They are here.
He showed that he did not actually have any books but knew their contents by heart.
Saint Euplius was sentenced to death. The Gospel found with him during his arrest was hung around his neck. During the execution, Saint Euplius was accompanied by a large number of people, including many secret Christians. Even then, he continued to preach, reading the Gospel, and interpreting its meaning to the people. On that day, many pagans converted to Christianity.
