The early Christian saint Euplius is revered not only in his home region of Sicily but also in Russia. He devoted his entire life to preaching the Gospel.

Euplius was born in the 3rd century and served in a church in Catania, Sicily. Despite the crackdown of the authorities on Christianity, he fearlessly preached the Gospel to pagans. Even during the persecutions, when the emperor prohibited reading or keeping the Book of Gospels, Euplius carried it with him and preached the Christian faith to his fellow citizens whenever possible. Crowds of people would gather around him in the streets of Catania.

One day, while he was reading from the Book of Gospels to a crowd and explaining its meaning, he was arrested and brought before the city’s ruler for questioning.

Why do you have that book in your hand? the ruler asked.
I was reading from it when I was caught, Euplius replied.

#8

The ruler of Catania tried to convince the deacon to abandon his faith in Christ. However, nothing could make him do that. Despite torture and imprisonment, his faith remained strong. After some time, Euplius was summoned to court again. The ruler asked him,

#9

Do you still have the writings that were prohibited by the emperor and which you had to hand over to the authorities?

#10

Euplius replied,

#11

I am a Christian and I cannot give them up. I would rather die than do that. These writings contain eternal life. In order not to lose that, I am willing to give up my earthly life. The ruler then asked, Where are they? Euplius said, They are here.

He showed that he did not actually have any books but knew their contents by heart.

Saint Euplius was sentenced to death. The Gospel found with him during his arrest was hung around his neck. During the execution, Saint Euplius was accompanied by a large number of people, including many secret Christians. Even then, he continued to preach, reading the Gospel, and interpreting its meaning to the people. On that day, many pagans converted to Christianity.

The Holy Martyr Archdeacon Euplius was executed in 304. In the 5th century, the first church in honor of Saint Euplius of Sicily was built — the church in Etna, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius.
