Fedot Sychkov painted ‘Girlfriends’ in 1909. He portrayed two cheerful peasant girls in traditional costumes. He managed to capture them without excessive sentimentality: robust children with rosy cheeks are looking at us directly and openly. The author used intensive color combinations to make the figures stand out. The black and brown outer clothes contrast with white snow, while red and yellow shades in the costumes make the girls’ figures bright.

Fedot Sychkov turned to children’s portraits in the 1900’s. Children in his paintings look cheerful and inquisitive, mischievous or ingenuous. The artist tried to capture in each character the unique features of a forming character. In addition to portraits of single people, Sychkov created group portraits: his characters slide down hills, make snowmen, climb fences.Fedot Sychkov turned to children’s portraits in the 1900’s. Fedot Sychkov came from Mordovian peasants. After studying in Petersburg, he returned to his native village and devoted his creative work to peasant life.

“The characters of my paintings are mainly the residents of the village of Kochelayevo, Republic of Mordovia. I like portraying common people not only at work, but also convey their cheerfulness, vivacity and play. I think that this unquenchable optimism of a common Russian man underlies his great creative power, a strong belief in a happy future”,
 — said the artist.

Sychkov’s creative manner was influenced by Itinerants. He painted his fellow villagers realistically without embellishment. Fedot Sychkov considered the famous artist Ilya Repin his main teacher. They knew each other, and Repin even helped the painter with advice: it is known that he suggested to Sychkov the best way to portray the face, hands and drapery on the portrait of Sychkov’s mother.

Fedot Sychkov usually modeled his characters on real people. The model for his painted “Mordovian Teacher” was a village teacher Sofia Ryabova. His wife Lidia Vasilievna was often his model.Fedot Sychkov usually modeled his characters on real people. The model for his painted “Mordovian Teacher” was a village teacher Sofia Ryabova. The library of his native village contains memoirs of his “accidental” models. One of them, Grafena Morozova, described her sessions with the artist: “I went to his place for 10 days, he paid me 25 copecks per day. I used this money to buy a skirt and a blouse. When many years later I came with my grandson to Sychkov”s memorial house in Kochelayevo village and we started looking at paintings, my grandson recognized me immediately on one of them and said: “Granny, this is you”. I will envision this painting for a long time’.
