Konstantin Gorbatov painted his picture ‘Pskov’ in 1915, when he was 39. However, views of ancient cities had inspired him since his young days. More than once he painted landscapes of old Moscow, Novgorod, Torzhok, Sergiyev Posad. The painter dedicated most of his paintings, a total of around 30. They show snowy winter in Pskov, spring mud and snow-melt floods, and autumn weather.

In his painting ‘Pskov’ Gorbatov depicted a late autumn view from the river over the city. The snow has already fallen, but navigation goes on: some small merchant boats are moored at the pier. There is another similar landscape by Gorbatov: ‘A View over Pskov’, also painted in 1915. The second painting shows the riverbank from a different angle.

Gorbatov painted Pskov views in a special, somewhat decorated style. He put small striking brushes on the canvas, choosing bright and clear keys. His landscapes looked light, as if they were sun drenched. The artist often painted old fortresses and cathedrals. There are almost no people on his paintings, therefore it is difficult to say in which century such landscape existed in Pskov.
The artist leaned some methods of painting from European impressionists when he was in Europe on a scholarship trip sponsored by the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. When abroad, he worked in Rome, visited Maxim Gorky in the Isle of Capri, travelled to France and Germany. Sometimes, art critics would note that even overseas cities in Gorbatov’s paintings looked like Pskov.

Having travelled over Europe, Gorbatov returned to Russia. New movements of painting were arising in Russia: suprematism, cubism, naïve art. However, the Middle Class still valued works of realism and impressionism: paintings by Gorbatov enjoyed popularity, and he was invited to join A.I. Kuindzhi Society of Artists. After the revolution the painter left Russia, however, living abroad he continued painting Russian landscapes. Before his death Gorbatov bequeathed to deliver all his paintings to Russia.
The painting ‘Pskov’ was acquired by the Generations Fund of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District for the collection ‘Rarities and Art Treasures’. Later, the work was handed over to the Khanty-Mansiysk State Museum of Fine Arts collection.
