The economic activity of the Nanai people, the indigenous people of the Far East, was complex. Throughout the year, men were engaged in fishing, women were engaged in cutting and harvesting fish, while children provided all possible assistance with household chores. The women also harvested yukola, dried cured fish meat, melted fish oil, collected skin separately and stored waste for feeding sled dogs and hunting dogs, of which there were up to a dozen in each family.

Before the start of the chum salmon fishing season, the Nanai people presented sacrificial food to the spirit of the owner of the house — dulin, and worshiped the spirit of the owner of the water element — tam. They brought sacrificial food to the river bank, threw it into the water and asked for good luck. It was believed that exploitative fishing was punishable by the owner of the place.

In May, the Nanai people went to fish in the lakes of the so-called common freshwater fish: crucian carp, common carp. They were caught with nets called adoli, which were woven from hemp or nettle threads using special needles called sarpol. The mesh size was measured with a special tool. To set a certain number of loops, a gorpia device was used, and the rope was twisted onto a khochko tool — a kind of wooden spindle.

Whole fish, chum salmon or pink salmon were planted as bait. Among the Nanai and Ulchi, the net for catching large fish had meshes up to 50 centimeters, and it reached 50 meters in length. The floats of the net were logs 1.5 meters long. From the perspective of the method of fishing, the nets were either fish stakes or drift nets, in shape they were quadrangular and bag-shaped. A rope with floats was tightly impaled on the top of the quadrangular net, and sinkers were placed on the bottom. Baggy nets could be planted on hoops.

Fish stakes were used in open water and under ice: in the latter case, the Amur peoples used a bag-shaped net called anga, which was installed with a special tool in the form of a long hook. A control cord extended from the net to a flexible twig in the snow. By its movement, the fisherman detected the caught fish and removed it from the net.

The Nanais worked with drift nets as follows: a fisherman held one end of the net, a float, which was usually a birch bark box, was tied to the opposite end. Water was poured into the box: the more water, the slower the net floated down the river.
