A siphon is a device for carbonating water at home. A high lid made of stainless metal is screwed into a narrow long neck to a blue metal cylinder, in the form of a wide and high bottle. A socket for a gas canister, a flat handle for pumping air and a narrow, curved tube for dispensing carbonated water from a siphon are mounted in the lid on three sides. The bottom of the siphon is round, flat. Fruit juice was poured into the siphon, carbonated water was obtained when gas was supplied.
In the Soviet Union, the production of soda siphons was massive, despite the availability of Soviet-made carbonated beverages known to us since childhood: Lemonade, Pinocchio, Bell, Tarragon, Cheburashka, Duchess, Citro… In almost any city there was a device for carbonated water, simple or with syrup. But at the same time, almost every Soviet family had a siphon produced in the USSR, Czechoslovakia, Poland or even in Western Europe.
The preparation of homemade carbonated drinks was both a family entertainment and a mandatory festive ritual. When creating drinks and cocktails, both syrups and jams and alcoholic components were used. Soviet mechanical plants and industrial plants produced siphons for carbonating water, metal, glass, as well as cans of food carbon dioxide. The cans were refillable. They could be used and then handed over to a hardware store in exchange for new ones.
